GVSU's Chipman Earns Third Straight POTY; WSU's Howard Named FOTY

GLIAC — For the third straight year, Grand Valley State senior Katie Chipman was named Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Player of the Year announced by the conference office on Wednesday (April 15), while Wayne State freshman Avery Howard captured Freshman of the Year honors. 


PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Katie Chipman - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State senior Katie Chipman (Plymouth, Mich.) has been named the 2020 GLIAC Player of the Year it was announced by the league office. She becomes the first-ever GLIAC women's golfer to be named the GLIAC Player of the Year three times in a career. Chipman, who tallied a scoring average of 73.53 and ranked 18th nationally, won two tournaments and finished among the top five four times during the fall portion of the schedule. Following a fourth-place finish at the Indianapolis Fall Invitational to open the season, Chipman won the Gilda's Club Invite with a -2, 70. In addition, Katie won the Chippewa Invitational with a -3, 141 and finished second at the Women's DII National Preview with a +3, 219.

 

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Avery Howard - Wayne State

Howard also competed in all five events and 10 rounds.  She posted a stroke average of 79.4 and collected three top-10 results plus another top-25 result.  Howard's best finish was at the GVSU Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invitational (Sept. 28) where she shot a 76 to tie-for-sixth.  She carded a a 154 (75, 79) at the SVSU Fall Invitational (Sept. 14-15) to tie-for-eighth.  Howard tied-for-10th at the ODU Cumberland Trail Classic (Sept. 21-22) with a 153 (74, 79) and finished the season with a 157 (76, 81) to tie-for-11th at the Davenport Panther Invitational (Oct. 19-20).
She is the first Warrior to earn that award since the program began in 2014.
