2021 GLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
GLIAC – The 2021 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Soccer awards have been announced after voting conducted by the league's coaches.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Caroline Halonen, Northern Michigan
The junior led NMU to a 8-2-1 overall record so far, and her mark of 11 goals thus far this season tied her for fifth in goals in a season in the Wildcat record book and moved her to seventh in career goals with 22. Halonen finished the regular season leading the GLIAC in goals (9) and shots (47). She also took second in points (19).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Tori Baker, Ashland
Junior center back Tori Baker is Ashland’s first GLIAC Defensive Player of the Year since Karen Carty earned the distinction in 2004. She led an AU defense that carries a 0.56 goals against average, conceding only six goals in 10 games this season. The Eagles have allowed opponents just 4.4 shots on goal per game this campaign and Baker has played all but nine minutes in the 10 contests. The Wadsworth, Ohio native is now a three-time All-GLIAC honoree. She stepped up to the penalty spot and scored the lone goal in Ashland’s 1-0 win over Davenport in the GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday (April 27).
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR - Mia Hansen, Grand Valley St.
Mia Hansen has earned GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors after emerging as a starting outside back for the defending national champions in the 2021 spring season. Her skill, durability and ability to jump into a starting role was critical to help the Lakers navigate a difficult season with several COVID-19 related issues and still reach the GLIAC Tournament championship.
GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR - Taryn Meiste, Ferris State
Ferris State University goalkeeper Taryn Meiste had an impressive season for the Bulldogs, leading FSU the school’s first-ever GLIAC Regular-Season Championship and the right to host the GLIAC Semifinals for the first time in program history. Meiste finished the year with a 7-1 overall record in goal and allowed only two goals on the year for a 0.22 goals against average with 21 saves. She pitched seven shutouts, which was the second-most in program history despite the shortened season, and owned a shutout streak of more than 500 minutes, which was the third-longest mark all-time at FSU. Meiste’s play led the Bulldogs to a number 11 national ranking and a final 8-1-1 overall record this year. The Bulldogs allowed only two goals on the year.
COACH OF THE YEAR - Greg Henson, Ferris State
Ferris State University head coach Greg Henson led the Bulldogs to the program’s first-ever GLIAC Regular-Season Championship and the number one seed for the conference tournament. The Bulldogs compiled a 7-0-1 regular season, finishing as the league’s lone unbeaten team en route to a number 11 national ranking. Ferris State hosted the GLIAC Semifinals for the first time in program history and finished the spring campaign with an 8-1-1 overall mark while giving up only two goals on the year. Henson’s squad set a program record for fewest losses in a season while posting a 5-1 mark at home and a 3-0-1 record in road contests this year.
