GVSU's Griva and Schall, LSSU's Cote receive women's tennis top honors; All-GLIAC teams announced

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2023 All-GLIAC Women's Tennis Team on Friday prior to the opening matches of the conference tournament at the Midland Tennis Center in Midland, Mich. 

Grand Valley State's Vasileia Griva was named GLIAC Player of the Year, while the Lakers' head coach, Sam Schall, was selected as GLIAC Women's Coach of the Year. Lake Superior State's Marilou Cote received the GLIAC Freshman of the Year award.


2023 GLIAC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Vasileia Griva, Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State junior Vasileia Griva (Athens, Greece) was voted GLIAC Player of the Year. Griva becomes the third Laker to be named GLIAC Player of the Year in program history. She helped lead the Lakers to an undefeated GLIAC 7-0 record and a GLIAC Regular Season Championship. The Junior went 5-2 in league play all from the No. 1 position. Overall, Griva is 11-7 in singles action with nine wins at the top position. Griva is currently ranked number 14 in doubles paired with Taylor Barrett. The two have posted nine wins this season all from the top doubles position.

2023 GLIAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR
Marilou Cote, Lake Superior State
Marilou Cote (Levis, Quebec) has been named the GLIAC Women’s Tennis Freshman of the Year after a strong debut collegiate season that saw her put together an 11-4 singles record while playing exclusively at the No. 1 spot (5-2 in league play), including a pair of victories over the 2022 and 2023 GLIAC Players of the Year. Cote was also able to provide a strong contribution in doubles play, leading the Lakers’ top doubles unit to a pair of victories against GLIAC competition. Cote marks the second consecutive LSSU Laker to be named GLIAC Freshman of the Year after Maddie Whip was named the league’s top rookie after the 2022 season.

2023 GLIAC COACH OF THE YEAR
Sam Schall, Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State head coach Sam Schall has been named the GLIAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year. Schall becomes the fifth coach to earn Coach of the Year honors in program history. In her fourth season, Schall guided the Lakers to a perfect 7-0 GLIAC mark and 13-5 overall record. The Lakers won the GLIAC Regular Season Championship for the second consecutive year under Schall. The Lakers currently sit number two in the Midwest regional rankings and are the No. 1 seed in the GLIAC tournament.
