BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Ferris State University women's volleyball team has vaulted to number one in the nation this week in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II National Rankings.
The Bulldogs, who are 22-1 overall this year, received 39 first-place votes and 1,157 total points to climb two spots in the national listing unveiled by the national coaches organization. It marks FSU's highest national listing ever in the AVCA poll, surpassing the previous number two ranking recorded earlier this campaign.
Ferris State moved past Northern State (S.D.), which remained second this week in the rankings with five first-place votes and 1,084 total points. Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) garnered a first-place vote and 1,072 points in placing third with Southwest Minnesota State also picking up a first-place mention and 1,059 total points in being ranked fourth. Last week's number one team, defending national champion Tampa, also received a first-place vote and fell to fifth with 1,000 total points.
The Bulldogs' current 22-1 overall record is the nation's best and FSU is coming off a pair of impressive home sweeps over both Findlay and Hillsdale this past weekend. The two teams had been first and second, respectively, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division standings heading into the weekend.
Overall, Ferris State has now won 10-straight matches to date this year and the Bulldogs continued their dominance at home where they are now 11-0 at home this campaign. FSU has currently won 32 of its last 33 home encounters, including 20-straight, and owns a 57-7 mark at home dating back to the start of the 2011 season.
This season, the Bulldogs' only loss came to the hands of current number seven ranked Wheeling Jesuit (W.Va.) in a neutral site contest. FSU has beat three teams currently found in the top eight of the national rankings, including Concordia-St. Paul, Southwest Minnesota State and eighth-ranked Rockhurst (Mo.).
Ferris State is the lone GLIAC member school found in the top 25 overall and one of only three schools from the Midwest Region along with Rockhurst and #21 Lewis.
