GVSU's Stone and Alkire earn women's lacrosse weekly honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the third GLIAC Lacrosse Athlete of the Week awards for the 2024 season. Grand Valley State swept the awards, with senior midfielder Sydney Stone earning offensive player of the week honors and senior defender Aislynn Alkire receiving defensive player of the week recognition.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Sydney Stone, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley senior midfield Sydney Stone was named the GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week following the Lakers two wins this weekend. Stone scored six times over the two games, while adding 10 draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers. In the 9-3 victory over #23 Colorado Mesa, Stone recorded a hat trick on just five shots. She grabbed five draw controls and caused two turnovers. On Sunday, Stone scored another hat trick and picked up another five draw controls, as the Lakers won 12-9. This season, Stone leads the team with 12 goals and 24 draw controls.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Aislynn Alkire, Grand Valley State

Earning GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week was senior defender Aislynn Alkire. Alkire helped lead the Laker defense in two strong showings over the weekend, as they gave up 12 goals on 38 shots. In the 9-3 win over Colorado Mesa, Alkire had six groundballs and caused two turnovers. She followed that up with two more groundballs, caused two more turnovers, and grabbed a draw control in the victory over Missouri Western Sate. Alkire leads the Lakers with 12 groundballs and seven forced turnovers this year.
