2017 GLIAC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
BAY CITY, Mich. -- No. 1 Grand Valley State and No. 6 Saginaw Valley picked up 2017 GLIAC Women's Soccer Tournament semifinal victories on Friday evening on the campus of Grand Valley State University. The Lakers and Cardinals will advance to Sunday's championship match slated for 1 PM in Allendale
The top seeded GVSU Lakers knocked off No. 4 Tiffin by an 8-0 final score thanks to a stretch during the first half in which they scored five goals in 11 minutes. GLIAC Offensive Player of the Year Gabriella Mencotti recorded a hat trick in the contest with scores in the 27th, 34th and 59th minutes, while her teammate Tara Lierman found the back of the net twice in the 25th and 73rd minutes. GVSU outshot TU by a 20-2 margin.
In the nightcap, No. 2 Ashland and No. 6 Saginaw Valley played 110 minutes of scoreless action before a thrilling session of penalty kicks took place. With SVSU shooting first, both teams missed on their first attempt before both finding the back of the net in round two. Saginaw Valley took the lead in the third round with a score from Whitney Fleming before the AU shooter missed. Ingrid Hannevig gave the Cardinals a 3-1 edge before SVSU's goalkeeper Abby Divozzo made the game-winning kick save to send the Cardinals on to the championship match in exciting fashion.
