INDIANAPOLIS -- Soren Holm (Rodovre, Denmark), a sophomore at Wayne State University, is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2015 NCAA Division II Men's Swimming & Diving Championship.

22753 Holm, majoring in biological sciences, currently carries a 4.0 GPA. He was presented with the award during a recognition banquet on Tuesday night in Indianapolis.

It represents the fourth time a WSU student-athlete has won the award. Men's swimmer Matthew Laschuk (Tecumseh, Ont. / Academie Ste. Cecile) won the award in back-to-back seasons, 2010 and 2011 while softball infielder Kristina Susalla (Garden City, Mich.) also won the award in 2010.

The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.

Holm was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team this past semester. In addition, he was selected to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (Term GPA 3.5+) for Fall 2013 (4.00), Winter 2014 (4.00) and Fall 2014 (4.00).
