WSU Women and GVSU Men Lead After Day One of GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships

JENISON, Mich. – The Wayne State women’s swimming & diving team and the Grand Valley State men’s team are in the lead after the first day of competition at the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Grand Valley State and Hillsdale.

The Wayne State women’s team recorded 172 points on the first day of the event, holding a 56-point advantage over second place Grand Valley State (116 points). Northern Michigan is currently third with 113 points and Hillsdale is fourth with 79 points. The Warriors took first in the 1000 free as Kristina Novichenko swam a 10:20.37. Wayne State also took first place in the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:43.17.

Ashland junior Hannah Mattar broke the All-Time GLIAC record in the 200 Yard Individual Medley with a time of 2:02.55 to win the race. The previous record of 2:02.88 was set by then Grand Valley State Laker Gloria Martinez Perez in 2012.

The GVSU men’s team posted 299.50 points on Day one, outdistancing second-place Wayne State, who has 209.5 total points. Ashland sits in third place with 79.5 points in the men’s standings. Individually, Gianni Ferrero placed first in the 200 IM with a pool record time of 1:46.97. The Wayne State men's 200 Yard Medley Relay team of J.D. Molina Perez, Piotr Jachowicz, Soren Holm and Joshua Schacht also set a new pool record of 1:27.89.

Competition resumes on day two of the Championships on Thursday morning with the preliminary events at 10:30 a.m.  Thursday's finals will begin at 6:00 p.m.
