GVSU Finishes Second at Women's Regionals; AU's Hu Qualifies Individually

The Grand Valley State women's golf team finished second at the NCAA Division II Super Region 1 tournament with a 54-hole score of 887 (+23) and will now advance to the NCAA Championships in Houston, Texas May 16-19 at Bay Oaks Country Club. GVSU will be competing in the NCAA Championships for the 11th consecutive year and the 16th time in the last 17 years. The Lakers carded a final round 306 (+18), finishing 26 strokes ahead of third place Missouri-St. Louis (913). Findlay finished fourth (941) and Ashland rounded out the top five with a score of 943. Indianapolis finished first with an 882 (+18) and will advance to the NCAA Championships with GVSU and UMSL. 

"I am so proud of how this team competed for 54 holes with one of the top teams (Indianapolis) in the country," said ninth-year head coach Rebecca Mailloux. "We stayed strong mentally and played the course hole-by-hole for all three rounds. We will now get a chance to compete against the top teams in the country again at the NCAA Championships."

Sophomore Katie Chipman, who carded a final round 80 (+8), finished tied for third overall with a 54-hole score of 221 (+5). Senior Samantha Moss finished tied for seventh with a 223 (+7), but shot a final round 74 (+2) to lead the Lakers in the final round. Freshman Olivia Reed finished ninth with a 224 (+8) and shot a final round 78 (+6), while sophomore Maria Sol Pose fired a final round 76 (+4) and finished 11th overall with a 226 (+10). Junior Mackenzie Blomberg carded a final round 78 (+6) and finished tied for 16th with a 54-hole total of 230 (+14).

Krystal Hu is going to nationals for the first time.

Ashland University's sophomore women's golfer finished in third place among players not on one of the top three teams at the 2018 NCAA Division II East Regional at Katke Golf Course in Big Rapids, Mich. That qualifies Hu for a spot at the 2018 NCAA Division II Championships, May 16-19 at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.

On the third and final day of the regional on Wednesday (May 9), Hu ended with a round of 76, finishing at 74-75-76—225, and in 10th place overall individually. She had birdies on holes No. 3 and 12 on Wednesday.

Hu joins Ali Green (2016) and Erin Misheff (2012) as Ashland women's golfers who have qualified for nationals as individuals.

As a team, Ashland placed fifth in the 12-team field. The Eagles ended at 309-317-317—943. Indianapolis rallied on the final day to win the team title (292-292-298—882), followed by Grand Valley State (289-292-306—887), Missouri-St. Louis (305-308-300—913), Findlay (316-313-312—941), and the Eagles.

Freshman Hannah Lemons finished her consistent regional tournament in a tie for 13th individually at 75-76-77—228. She birdied holes No. 1 and 12 on Day 3, and concluded her rookie season with five rounds in a row of 78 or better.

Another freshman, Sophie Hemleben, was tied for 28th after her three-day total of 79-78-79—236. She birdied No. 12 on Wednesday, and for the first time in her collegiate career, has posted four consecutive sub-80 scores.

Junior Monica Torda (59th, 81-88-85—254) and sophomore Logan Pottorf (66th, 89-95-89—273, birdie on No. 2 on Wednesday) rounded out the Ashland effort.
