GVSU Tops NSCAA Women's Poll, SVSU No. 4 in Men's Rankings

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's and women's soccer combined appeared in the first 2014 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) regular season poll.

GVSU Women's Soccer Tops NSCAA/Continental Tire Rankings, SVSU No. 22

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The Grand Valley State women's soccer team are ranked the top team in Division II for the 12th consecutive time and the longest run in program history. The Lakers started the 2014 season with a pair of shutouts against NCAA Tournament qualifiers from a year ago, including a 4-0 victory over No. 13 Quincy. 

This marks the 11th consecutive time the Lakers have been the top-ranked club in the NSCAA/Continental Tire rankings, which matches the longest streak in program history. It is also the 39th time in history GVSU has been voted the No. 1 team in the country. No other team has been atop the rankings more than the Lakers since the poll's inception in 1997.

Saginaw Valley State also started a new era under head coach Michael O'Neill with a couple clean sheets against Indianapolis and Bellarmine on a neutral field. The Cardinals are ranked No. 22 in the NSCAA poll.

SVSU Men Ranked Fourth in NSCAA Poll, Ohio Dominican No. 14

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Saginaw Valley State made a splash near the top of the men's poll and arrived at No. 4 a few years removed from a national runner-up showing. The Cardinals pitched shutouts against both No. 15 Lewis and Cedarville. Freshman Matthew Lang posted two of SVSU's three goals on the week, incuding the game-winner in OT against Cedarville.

Ohio Dominican showed up at No. 14 in the first poll of the regular season after a pair of road victories against Urbana (2-0 shutout) and Bellarmine (3-2 win).
