DU's Whelan and SVSU's Kay honored with men's soccer weekly awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 5 of the 2022 men's soccer season. Davenport senior forward Matt Whelan was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Saginaw Valley State sophomore goalkeeper Nick Kay was honored as GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Matt Whelan, Davenport

Davenport picked up a pair of wins over the weekend thanks in large part to the play of senior forward Matt Whelan. The Irishman scored twice in DU's 4-0 win on Friday at St. Cloud State and then assisted on two goals in DU's 3-2 win at Upper Iowa on Sunday. Whelan's multiple-goal game on Friday was the ninth of his career.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Nick Kay, Saginaw Valley State

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s soccer team remained undefeated on the season with a win and a tie last week in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The No. 5 Cardinals have found their stopper at the backend of the defense in the last two weeks in freshman Nick Kay, who has established a 360-minute streak of shutout play for SVSU. In two games last week, the Cardinals shut out Northern Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside on the road to improve to 8-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the GLIAC. In two games last week, Kay made five total saves to keep the Cardinals in first place in the GLIAC.
