GLIAC Announces Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its third weekly awards of the 2022 outdoor track and field season. Lake Superior State senior David Mitter and freshman Brooke Barkocy of Grand Valley State received the track honors while the field honors were earned by Davenport graduate student Claude Ockert and Wayne State junior Morgan Witzgall. 


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -  David Mitter, Lake Superior State

Lake Superior State senior distance runner David Mitter (Howell, Mich.) placed first in the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase event at Oakland University’s Golden Grizzlies Invite on Friday, April 8. Mitter recorded a time of 9:22.69 in his first time competing collegiately in the event and currently holds the second best time in the GLIAC this season. The Howell, Mich. native won the race by nearly 15 seconds.


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Brooke Barkocy, Grand Valley State

Freshman Brooke Barkocy (Elgin, Ill.) finished first in the 400m Hurdles with a personal-best time of 1:02.98 at the Pacesetter Sports Invitational on April 9. Barkocy also ran third in the 4x400m relay with the Lakers finishing second clocking in a time of 4:04.82. 


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Claude Ockert, Davenport

Claude Ockert (Kingsley, Mich.) placed second in the hammer throw and his record throw was 200' 4" at the Bellarmine Jim Vargo Invitational. He made a national qualifier mark and currently ranks first in the GLIAC and third in the country.


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK -  Morgan Witzgall, Wayne State

Wayne State University junior Morgan Witzgall (Auburn, Mich.) took first place in the long jump at the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Invite with a distance of 5.61m, which was the third-best mark in program history.  Witzgall then finished third in the triple jump at 10.95m, which was the sixth-best mark in school history.  Both events were her first time competing in them outdoor as a collegian.
