GVSU Lacrosse Earns All-Independent Postseason Honors

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Five members of the Grand Valley State women’s lacrosse team earned a spot on the All-Independent second team as well as one earning a spot on the All-Freshman squad as announced on Wednesday.

Coaches who elected to participate in the selection process voted on the Division II Independent women’s lacrosse awards. Schools participating were Catawba College (N.C.), Florida Southern College, Grand Valley State University, Lenoir-Rhyne University (N.C.), Newberry College (S.C.), Shepherd University (W. Va.), Tiffin University (Ohio) and Urbana University (Ohio).

Freshman attacker Victoria Devine (Centereach, N.Y.), freshman midfielder Jordan Luberto (Okemos, Mich.), redshirt freshmen defenders Alexia O’Connor (Rockford, Mich.) and Ashley Stoltenberg (Fenton, Mich.) as well as freshman defender Alyssa Neumen (Rockford, Mich.) all earned a spot on the second team. Luberto was also named to the All-Freshman Team.

Devine paced the Lakers with 37 goals and six assists for a team-best 43 points. Luberto made an impact in the midfield, recording a team-high 57 draw controls as well as tallying 26 goals and 12 assists.

The defenders held opponents to 12.41 goals per game, which ranks 31st in the nation, while limiting three opponents to less than 10 goals. O’Connor was fourth on the team in caused turnovers (11) and second in ground balls with 30. Stoltenberg had six caused turnovers and 25 ground balls. Neumen recorded one goal from on a free-position shot in the first game of the season, while remaining an integral part of the defensive unit.

GVSU closed out its inaugural season with a 10-7 record. It included a 5-1 record at home and a 2-0 mark at neutral sites. The Lakers return all but two of their team including all 12 starters.
