GLIAC honors Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Year

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2023 GLIAC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Year, as voted on by the conference coaches following the NCAA Division II Championships. 

Grand Valley State claimed three of the four conference honors, with Caleb Futter earning men's track athlete of the year, Natalie Graber winning women's field athlete of the year and Jacob Urban receiving men's field athlete of the year.

Saginaw Valley State's Cheyenne Williamson was named women's field athlete of the year. 


2023 GLIAC MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Caleb Futter, Grand Valley State
Caleb Futter finished fourth in the steeplechase at the NCAA DII Nationals with a time of 9:16.01. Futter placed first at the 2023 outdoor GLIACS in the men's steeplechase with a time of 8:58.81, breaking the previous GLIAC meet record. Futter is currently ranked Nationally within three events; steeplechase (2nd), 5000m (18th) and 1500m (35th) and holds the current GVSU school record of 8:42.20 in the men's steeplechase.

2023 GLIAC WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Natalie Graber, Grand Valley State
Natalie Graber finished fourth in the steeplechase at the NCAA DII Nationals with a time of 10:32.88 and eighth in the 5000m with a time of 16:51.41, earning her two USTFCCCA First-Team All-America Honors. At the 2023 outdoor GLIAC conference meet, Graber finished first in the 1500m with a time of 4:23.99. Graber ends the 2023 outdoor season currently ranked Nationally in three events; steeplechase (3rd), 5000m (6th) and 1500m (7th).


2023 GLIAC MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Jacob Urban, Grand Valley State
Jacob Urban claimed an individual National title in the men's hammer throw with a new personal-best throw of 66.05m at the 2023 Outdoor Nationals to lead Grand Valley State to a fourth place finish. In addition, Urban claimed a GLIAC conference title in the men's hammer throw at the 2023 outdoor GLIACs, earning him the 2023 GLIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Meet honors. Currently, Urban finishes out his outdoor season ranking 1st in the Nation (Division II) in the men's hammer throw.

2023 GLIAC WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Cheyenne Williamson, Saginaw Valley State
Cheyenne Williamson repeated for the third time as national champion in the NCAA Division II heptathlon in 2023. Her 5861-point performance not only dethrones her old school record of 5,757 points, but it also places her fourth all-time in NCAA Division II. Williamson did not place outside of the top three in every event except one. Williamson's high jump mark of 1.77m (5'9.75") earned her a second individual title. This is her fourth national championship in the last three years. Williamson capped off her extremely impressive campaign with a seventh-place finish in the 100m hurdles. Williamson scored two additional points for the Cardinals, adding her total for the meet up to 23, capping off her week with a time of 13.51 (0.07 short of her school record).
