GLIAC Baseball Athletes of the Week - Week 9

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its ninth weekly baseball awards for the 2016 season. Northwood's Matt Stojkov captured GLIAC North Division Pitcher of the Week honors, while Hillsdale senior Luke Ortel collected GLIAC North Division Player of the Week accolades. In the South Division, Malone's Joshua Hurford garnered GLIAC Pitcher of the Week distinction along with Ashland sophomore J.P. Sorma who was named GLIAC Player of the Week for the second straight week.

Pitcher of the Week - North Division
Matt Stojkov Northwood Pitcher Jr.

Highlights: Northwood junior Matt Stojkov made four appearances out of the bullpen for Northwood last week, earning three saves and not allowing a runs in 4 2/3 innings of work. He picked up a save in NU's 9-6 win against Grand Valley State April 20. He then saved both ends of a doubleheader against Wayne State Sunday afternoon, allowing Northwood to close out a four-game sweep over the Warriors. His final save of the week saw him go two innings while striking out three. 

Pitcher of the Week - South Division
Joshua Hurford Malone Pitcher So.

Highlights: Malone sophomore righthander Joshua Hurford was tremendous in two appearances last week. In a win over Walsh on Wednesday, Hurford allowed just one earned run while striking out five over six innings. In a 14-inning win over Tiffin on Saturday, Hurford tossed six scoreless relief innings, working on just two days rest, striking out five more. In total, he went 1-0 in 12 innings, struck out 10 and sported a 0.75 ERA.

Player of the Week - North Division

Luke Ortel Hillsdale Outfielder Sr.
Highlights: Hillsdale senior outfielder Luke Ortel set five school records last week, helping the Chargers to a 5-1 record and a 4-game sweep of Saginaw Valley State. In Hillsdale's six games, he batted .625 with a slugging percentage of 1.042, the second straight week he's had a slugging percentage above 1.000. He had 15 total hits, 5 doubles, a triple, 1 home run and 7 RBI. In the team's six games last week, he set school single-season records for total hits and doubles, and set school career records for at bats, doubles and total hits. He ranks in the GLIAC's top two in six offensive categories.
Player of the Week - South Division
J.P. Sorma Ashland Third Base So.
Highlights: Ashland sophomore J.P. Sorma picked up right where he left off the previous week, going 10-for-23 (.435) with three home runs, 12 RBIs and eight runs scored in six games. Sorma had three multi-hit games and three multi-RBI games as the Eagles went 4-2 last week.
