WSU's Hitzelberger and DU's Fischer honored with weekly GLIAC baseball awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its sixth weekly baseball awards of the 2024 baseball season. Wayne State sophomore first baseman Bennett Hitzelberger was named GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week, while Davenport junior right-hander Carson Fischer was selected as GLIAC Pitcher of the Week.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bennett Hitzelberger, Wayne State

Bennett Hitzelberger (Richmond, Mich.) was named GLIAC Player of the Week on Monday for the second time this season.  Last week, Hitzelberger hit .500 (7-for-14) in Wayne State's 4-0 stretch with five runs, one double, six RBI, two walks, no strikeouts and a stolen base. The sophomore turned in an on-base percentage of .588 while slugging .571.


PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Carson Fischer, Davenport

Davenport's Carson Fischer set a career high with 13 strikeouts in seven innings in a 4-1 win in game one on Friday at Purdue Northwest in the GLIAC opener. He allowed just one hit in the gem which came with one out in the fifth inning. He allowed one unearned run in the first inning and then retired 11 straight batters before the fifth inning single. It was the first win this season for Fischer and was his second 10-plus strikeout game with the other coming in his previous career high of 12 strikeouts on Apr. 21 in seven innings against Parkside.
