Grand Valley State women and Ashland men sweep weekly track and field honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following Week Four of the 2018-19 indoor track and field season. Grand Valley State swept the women's honors as Rachael Walters was named GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week, and Elli Kimes was named GLIAC Field Athlete of the Week. Ashland claimed both men's awards. Trevor Bassitt received the GLIAC Track Athlete of the Week award, and Brent Fairbanks the Field Athlete of the Week honor.


WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Rachael Walters - Grand Valley State

Senior Rachael Walters (Belding, Mich.) won the mile at the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open with a time of 4:55.10. Her NCAA Provisional Qualifying Time ranks first in the GLIAC and second nationally. She also won the 400-meter dash in :57.38.


WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Elli Kimes - Grand Valley State

Sophomore Elli Kimes (Cashmere, Wash.) cleared 12-8 to win the women's pole vault at the GVSU Mike Lints Alumni Open. Her NCAA Provisional Qualifying height ranks first in the GLIAC and fourth nationally.


MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Trevor Bassitt - Ashland

Sophomore Trevor Bassitt (Lima, Ohio) placed first in the 60-meter hurdles (:06.93) and 200-meter dash (:21.35) at the Youngstown State Icreaker, setting NCAA Provisional Qualifying Times in both events. Ashland's 4x400-meter relay team clocked a provisional qualifying time of 3:16.10 and finished second. Bassitt is ranked first nationally in the 60-meter hurdles and third in the 200 dash.


MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Brent Fairbanks - Ashland

Sophomore Brent Fairbanks (Austintown, Ohio) won the men's weight throw at Friday's Youngstown State Icebreaker, setting a facility record with a distance of 10.25 meters (71-10 3/4). He leads the GLIAC and NCAA Division II in the event.
