GVSU's Mencotti Named NSCAA Scholar Player of the Year, Three Lakers Named to Scholar All-American Teams

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Three members of the Grand Valley State women's soccer team have been recognized for their outstanding work both on the field and in the classroom, and were named NSCAA Scholar All-Americans per a release from the national office on Friday. Jnuior Gabriella Mencotti was named the 2016 NSCAA Scholar Player of the Year, joined by senior Clare Carlson on the First Team, and classmate Shannon Quinn on the Second Team. 

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America recognized 27 total athletes from Division II women's soccer on the Scholar All-American Teams. To be eligible for the award, players must have held a 3.30 or better cumulative GPA, have started and made contributions on the field in at least 50 percent of all games, and be a junior or above in academic standing. 

Carlson is making her second appearance as an NSCAA Scholar All-American, having achieved the award last season as well. Mencotti and Quinn are both first time honorees, as they were ineligible per class standing last season. 

Grand Valley State had another impressive season, racking up a 23-2-1 record, recording the program's eighth straight NCAA  semifinal and fourth straight title game appearance, a 10th straight season with 20+ wins, and a fourth straight Midwest Regional Championship. In addition, the Lakers also claimed their 12thstraight GLIAC regular season championship and 10th straight GLIAC Tournament title earlier in the season, and led Division II in goals, assists, points per game and total points.
