GVSU's Griva Named Player of the Year; 2019 GLIAC Women's Tennis Awards Announced

GLIAC -- Grand Valley St. sophomore Vera Griva has been selected 2019 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Year by league coaches. Michigan Tech's Dominika Bobik was named Freshman of the Year, while Wayne State's Sheila Snyder was voted Coach of the Year.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Vera Griva - Grand Valley St.

Vera Griva began her sophomore campaign as the reigning GLIAC Freshman of the Year and All-GLIAC First Team honoree after posting a 21-6 record for singles play from spots No. 1 and No. 2 in the 2018-19 season. Griva has accumulated 11 singles wins and holds an undefeated conference record this season.  In doubles play, Griva leads the Lakers with nine wins alongside Marily Canellopoulos.

FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: Dominika Bobik - Michigan Tech

Dominika Bobik, who hails from Wroclaw, Poland, powers the Huskies with 10 singles wins and 14 victories in doubles competition as a freshman at Tech. Bobik is undefeated in conference singles matches, boasting a 9-0 record going into the GLIAC tournament this weekend. She has played the majority of her contests in the No. 3 spot where she is 6-0, but has two wins in the No.1 position and one victory in No.2 singles. Bobik is 8-1 in conference doubles, with all her matches taking place in the number two spot.

COACH OF THE YEAR: Sheila Snyder - Wayne State

Sheila Snyder, who is in her 31st season at Wayne State in 2019, was selected as the GLIAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year for the third time in her illustrious career (first in 1994 and most recently in 2014).  She guided the Warriors to a 9-0 conference record, clinching the regular-season title for the first time since 2014.  Wayne State earned the No. 1 Tournament seed after notching a 5-2 victory over the previously unbeaten Grand Valley State.  The Warriors clinched the regular-season title by sweeping Ferris State.  Despite losing last year's top player, Snyder led the Green and Gold to win 57 of the possible 63 league points.
