Official 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-America Release
AUSTIN, TEXAS – Four Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men and women’s basketball student-athletes were named to the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-America teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Hillsdale junior Kyle Cooper was selected to the first team, while Northern Michigan senior Alyssa Colla, Hillsdale’s senior Megan Fogt, and Michigan Tech’s Ben Stelzer were all second-team selections. Hillsdale is the only school in the nation to have a player on both the men's and women's Academic All-American Teams.
Kyle Cooper was the lone first-team honoree from the GLIAC with a 3.9 grade-point average majoring in accounting. Cooper is having a sensational season for the Charger men's basketball team, averaging 20.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 54 percent from the floor, 41 percent from 3-point land and 85 percent from the free throw line. He ranks second in the GLIAC in scoring, first in rebounding, second in minutes played, No. 11 in 3-pointers made per game and No. 12 in blocked shots.
Alyssa Colla has been named All-GLIAC twice in her career, second team as a sophomore and first team as a junior, along with earning a spot on the All-Defensive team the past two seasons. She also excels in the classroom with a 3.91 GPA in public relations. Colla was also honored as a member of the Daktronics, Inc. All-Midwest Region second team her junior season after averaging 16.4 points per game and scoring more than 20 points in 10 games.
This season, Colla has scored more than 20 points 12 times this season including a career-high 33 points against Lake Superior State at home. Colla ranks second in the GLIAC averaging 17.8 points per game this season while ranking second averaging 36.5 minutes per outing. Colla became the sixth Wildcat in program history to score 1,500 career points and currently sits in fifth place on the all-time scoring list with 1,524 career points.
Megan Fogt is putting the finishing touches on a magnificent career on and off the court. This marks the second year in a row she's earned Second Team Academic All-American honors from CoSIDA. Only one other player in the country – Seattle Pacific's Suzanna Olson – repeated as an Academic All-American from last year, as Fogt did.
The Chargers' all-time leading shot blocker, Fogt also ranks ninth in school history with 1,295 total points, second in rebounds with 983, seventh with 492 field goals made and seventh with 318 free throws made. She was named the 2013-14 GLIAC Player of the Year and was a First-Team All-American selection by both Daktronics and the WBCA. Fogt is an exercise science major.
Ben Stelzer was the Preseason GLIAC Men's Basketball Player of the Year and is currently leading the league in scoring at a 22.1 points per game clip thanks to 100 3-point field goals made at a 45.2 percent clip and 84.9 percent from the foul stripe. Stelzer holds a 3.69 GPA as a finance major for the Huskies.
