Grand Valley State Leads Action-Packed Day 1 at 2016 GLIAC Indoor Championships

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Grand Valley State University Lakers set the pace on Day 1 of the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor Championships inside the Heminger Center on the campus of Tiffin University. 

The GVSU women recorded 73 points on Saturday to lead top-ranked Hillsdale (38) by a 35-point margin with Ashland not far behind at 34 points. The Laker men amassed 55 points on Day 1 to sit in front of Ashland (23) by 22 points, while Saginaw Valley is positioned third with 20 points. 

Grand Valley State earned top performances from Amy Cymerman in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:05.25, while Jaime Roberts took home the gold with a height of 3.91 meters in the pole vault. On the men's side, Chris May won the 5,000 meter competition crossing the line in 14:39.03 and Darient Thornton muscled his way to the top of the weight throw with a toss of 20.64 meters. The Lakers Distance Medley Relay squad consisting of Barnes, Bright-Mitchell, Porter and Mach also earned first place honors in the finale on Saturday stopping the clock in 10:00.31. 

Findlay's Lydia Guagenti garnered top accolades in the women's pentathlon racking up a score of 3,708 to win the first title of the meet. Hillsdale's DMR team made up of McIntyre, Guy, Watts and Oren continued their dominance in the GLIAC DMR en route to their fourth-consecutive gold medal with a time of 11:43.41.

In the women's weight throw, Megan Tomei of Ashland captured top honors with a mark of 19.73 meters. Northwood earned its first medal of the championships with a gold in the women's long jump thanks to a 5.78 meter leap from Elaina Meadows. In the last event of the evening, Saginaw Valley's Robert Tarpley flew to a distance of 7.47 meters in the men's long jump to bring gold back to campus.

Sunday's competition gets underway with the continuation and conclusion of the Men's Heptathlon at 9:00 AM.
