DU's Bodis and Parkside's Powell honored as GLIAC golfers of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its third weekly men's and women's golf awards of the 2023 fall season. Davenport graduate student Brandon Bodis was named GLIAC men's golfer of the week while Parkside freshman AJ Powell earned GLIAC women's golfer of the week honors.

MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: Brandon Bodis, Davenport

Brandon Bodis of the Davenport men’s golf team has been named GLIAC Men’s Golfer of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. The graduate led the Panthers to a first-place finish out of 12 teams at the Flyer Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 2-3) in Lemont, Ill. Bodis tallied nine birdies through two rounds, shooting 68 (-4) in round one and 69 (-3) in the second round for a final score of 137 (-7). It’s the first time in his career he has finished as a medalist, while he has finished in the top five 13 times in six years at DU.

WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK: AJ Powell, Parkside

History was made on Tuesday at the Flyer Intercollegiate Invite by AJ Powell of the Parkside women's golf team. Powell came from behind to force a playoff before recording a par on the extra hole to win the first individual tournament title in program history. Powell put together a near flawless finish on the Ravines course at Cog Hill Country Club to claim the title. She played her final four holes in four under par, including an eagle on the par four sixth. Powell drove the green on the sixth, which was set up at 272 yards Tuesday. The first-year Ranger then made the eagle putt to force a playoff. The playoff hole was the 316-yard first hole. Powell put her tee shot in the fairway before finding the green in regulation. Her birdie putt just missed, but the tap-in par was enough to secure the individual title in program history.
