    Tiffin University men’s soccer player Adrian Vlad (Alba Lulia, Romania) and Saginaw Valley State University women’s soccer player Kim Oberski (Port Huron, Mich.) were chosen as the recipients for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Post-Graduate Scholarship.The honor, which awards each recipient $5,000 in aid to the graduate school of their choice, was voted on by the Faculty Athletic Representatives in the GLIAC.

    Indianapolis, Ind. -- Grand Valley State senior soccer player Katy Tafler has been selected by the NCAA Honors Committee as one of eight outstanding student-athletes for their athletics success, academic achievement and community service as recipients of the 2009 NCAA Top VIII Award. Tafler is Grand Valley State’s first-ever Top VIII recipient. The NCAA Top VIII Award will be presented at the NCAA Honors Celebration at the Newseum, The Interactive Museum of News in downtown Washington, D.C. on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009.

    SAN ANGELO, Tex. - Grand Valley State placed three student-athletes on the Daktronics, Inc. All-America teams. Seniors Kristina Nasturzio and Katy Tafler, as well as junior Natalja Stanski, all earned first team honors. This marks the third time that Tafler has been a first-team selection, while Nasturzio is a two-time selection and Stanski is a first-time honoree.

The Lakers earned the right to host the Midwest and Central Region finals this Friday (Nov. 21) with the winners meeting in the NCAA Division II Quarterfinals on Sunday (Nov. 23).

No. 3 seed Saginaw Valley State defeated No. 2 Tiffin in the first semifinal match, 2-1. No. 1 seed GVSU defeated No. 4 Ferris State University in the second semifinal match, 3-0. The championship game between No. 1 Grand Valley State University and No. 3 Saginaw Valley State University will be played on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 pm.

    Orange Beach, Ala. - Grand Valley State University gave up two goals in a match for the first time all season and could not overcome the deficit. After giving up two goals to the University of Tampa in the first half, the #1 Lakers got a goal from Ashley Elsass right after the break, but could not tally the game-tying goal in the remaining 43 minutes. The Lakers end the season with a 21-1-1 record and a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Final Four.

    Allendale, Mich. - Jenna Wenglinski made the most out of her first start in a Grand Valley State University uniform. Wenglinski started for the injured Sue Christenson and scored her first goal of the season, also the game-winner, to propel the #1 Lakers to a 4-0 win over Mercyhurst in the GLIAC Championship. The win gives the Lakers their third consecutive GLIAC Championship and advances their record to 19-0 on the season.

    Allendale, Mich. - The GLIAC announced its all-conference awards on Friday between semifinal matches of the conference tournament. Grand Valley State University earned the most all-conference nods, earning nine of the 11 spots on the All-GLIAC First Team, as well as Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. Katy Tafler won the Offensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive season.
