NEW ORLEANS — Northern Michigan's Sophie McDonald was named the NCAA Division II National Athlete of the Week, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday afternoon.

McDonald led the Wildcats to a first-place finish at the U.P. Championships, winning the individual title by clocking in at 22:59.0.

McDonald's time was 11.6 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

A year ago, McDonald was named to the all-GLIAC second team after placing 11th at the league's championship meet with a time of 22:30.6. She then captured USTFCCCA all-Midwest Region accolades by crossing the line in a season-best 21:38.536 to take 20th at the regional championship meet.

McDonald and the Wildcats begin championship season this weekend, competing at the GLIAC Championships Saturday at 11 a.m. in Big Rapids, Mich.
