GLIAC honors outdoor track & field athletes of the year

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2024 outdoor track & field athletes of the year, as voted on by the conference coaches following the NCAA Division II Championships.

Grand Valley State athletes were selected for the men's honors, with Caleb Futter earning track athlete of the year and Myles Kerner receiving field athlete of the year. 

Saginaw Valley State swept the women's awards, with Alona Olshevska claiming track athlete of the year and Cheyenne Nesbitt collecting field athlete of the year.


2024 GLIAC MEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Caleb Futter, Grand Valley State

Caleb Futter finished out the 2024 Outdoor Track and Field season with a fifth-place finish in the men’s 3000m steeplechase and a 12th place finish in the 1500m. The Grand Valley State men’s program earned a fifth-place finish overall at the 2024 NCAA Division II Nationals, with a team score of 41.5 points. At the 2024 GLIAC Championships, Futter finished in first place in the 1500m and steeplechase, earning himself the Track Athlete of the Meet and High Point Athlete of the Meet honors. Additionally, Futter recorded a personal-best at the GVSU Extra Weekend Meet in the 1500m with a time of 3:43.12, breaking the previous Grand Valley State school record.

2024 GLIAC WOMEN'S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Alona Olshevska, Saginaw Valley State

Alona Olshevska broke her SVSU record in the 400m run with a time of 52.78 to finish in second place at the Division II Outdoor National Championships. She earned All-America in the 400m for her finish. Olshevska was a member of the 4x100 relay team that also set a new school record and earned All-America in the finals for the relay race. She got the meet started with a school record in the first round of the 400m, which she broke again in the finals.


2024 GLIAC MEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Myles Kerner, Grand Valley State

Myles Kerner closed out the 2024 Outdoor Track and Field season as the NCAA Division II National Champion in the men’s shot put. Kerner recorded a throw of 19.94m, not only crowning him the National Champion, but additionally the new Grand Valley State school record holder as well as the Welch Stadium facility record holder. The Grand Valley State men’s program earned a fifth-place finish overall at the 2024 NCAA Division II Nationals, with a team score of 41.5 points. At the 2024 GLIAC Championships, Kerner finished in first place with a throw of 19.33m, as the Lakers claimed their sixth consecutive, and 17th program total GLIAC title. Additionally, Kerner earned six first place finishes on the season, including a win at the 2024 Texas Relays. Kerner ended his season ranked first in Division II, eighth in All-Collegiate and seventh on the Division II All-Time list.

2024 GLIAC WOMEN'S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Cheyenne Nesbitt, Saginaw Valley State

Cheyenne Nesbitt made history at the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships as she claimed her fourth consecutive National Title in the heptathlon after setting a new SVSU record with a final score of 6002. She is the first woman in NCAA history, in any division, to win four consecutive heptathlon championships, and she is just one of six NCAA Division II women’s athletes to win four-straight national championships in their respective event. The 6002 point total ranks second all-time in NCAA Division II. She is the third woman in D2 to break the 6000-point mark. In addition, Nesbitt set a new Cardinal record in the 100m hurdles (13.09) and the high jump (1.78m) on the first day. She earned a total three All-America honors in the heptathlon, high jump, and 4x100 relay, setting new school records in all three events.
