FSU's Nowicki and Maat and MTU's Beyer honored as GLIAC volleyball players of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following week eight of the 2022 volleyball season. Ferris State sophomore outside hitter Claire Nowicki was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, Michigan Tech senior defensive specialist Carissa Beyer was honored as GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Ferris State sophomore setter Kaylee Maat received GLIAC Setter of the Week recognition for the fifth time this season.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Claire Nowicki, Ferris State

Sophomore hitter Claire Nowicki led Ferris State to a 2-1 mark at the Midwest Region Crossover in Hammond (Ind.) over the weekend, totaling a squad-high 4.10 kills and 3.50 digs per set against strong competition. The GLIAC's top-seeded Bulldogs won their opening two matches before falling to Lewis in Saturday's finale. Nowicki averaged a team-high 4.7 points per set and hit .407 overall for the three outings. Overall, she totaled 41 kills, 35 digs, five blocks and three aces. Nowicki hit .550 overall with 13 kills, nine digs, three blocks and three aces in the opener against Cedarville and came back to total 16 kills, 12 digs and a block in a victory over Rockhurst. She concluded the weekend with 12 kills, 14 digs and a block versus Lewis. For the weekend, she totaled 46.5 points in 10 sets of action.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Carissa Beyer, Michigan Tech

Michigan Tech's Carissa Beyer is the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight time. She was named to the Midwest Region Crossover All-Tournament Team after she helped lead the Huskies to a 2-1 on the weekend, anchoring the defense with 6.36 digs per set while also adding 12 assists and five aces. Beyer tallied 20 digs in a 3-0 loss to Ashland and added 33 digs in a 3-2 win over Indianapolis on Friday. She went on a streak of four matches with over 20 digs. In Saturday's sweep of Cedarville, Beyer dug up 17 balls. Beyer ranks third in the GLIAC at 4.83 digs per set and second on the team with 19 service aces. She has hit double figures in digs 19 times this season with five matches over 20 digs and two over 30.


SETTER OF THE WEEK - Kaylee Maat, Ferris State

Ferris State University sophomore setter Kaylee Maat had another big week for the Bulldogs as she totaled 126 assists while averaging an impressive 12.60 assists per set for FSU, which went 2-1 overall at the Midwest Region Crossover in Hammond, Ind. Maat helped guide the GLIAC?s top seeded Bulldogs to the finale after back-to-back wins on Friday before a setback to Lewis the final day. She totaled 57 assists in a 3-1 win over Rockhurst on Friday night while adding 15 digs and posted 36 assists against Cedarville along with 33 versus Lewis. For the weekend, she totaled 126 assists, 27 digs, eight service aces and seven kills in 10 frames.
