MTU's Raabe, GVSU's Wight, NMU's Van Remortel named GLIAC volleyball players of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 10 of the 2023 volleyball season. Michigan Tech sophomore outside hitter Meg Raabe was selected as GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, Grand Valley State senior middle blocker Sarah Wight was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Northern Michigan senior setter Lauren Van Remortel earned GLIAC Setter of the Week honors.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Meg Raabe, Michigan Tech

Michigan Tech sophomore outside hitter Meg Raabe led the Huskies' offense in a busy week where Tech went 2-1. She totaled 65 kills, averaging 5 per set while hitting .321. She averaged 6.3 kills per set in the two wins and hit .342 while adding 16 digs (2 d/s) and 6 blocks. She scored 55 points on the weekend, averaging 6.9 per set. She racked up a career-high 32 kills in a five-set win over Wayne State on Saturday while adding 11 digs for a double-double. She answered the next day with 18 kills while hitting .375 in a sweep of Saginaw Valley. After missing nine matches early in the season with injury, Raabe is climbing the GLIAC kills per set rankings and is currently ninth (3.19).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Sarah Wight, Grand Valley State

Sarah Wight has been named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Wight had 16 total kills, averaging 1.33 a set, while adding 34 kills on a .368 hitting percentage, and tallied 11 digs. She had 12 kills and six blocks in Tuesday’s victory over Davenport, then added 14 kills and seven blocks in the win over Ferris State. She closed out her week on Sunday by tallying eight kills, five digs, and three blocks. Wight is the Lakers leading blocker this season, recording 92 blocks, and she is second in the GLIAC with 1.08 blocks per set.


SETTER OF THE WEEK - Lauren Van Remortel, Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan senior setter Lauren Van Remortel was named the GLIAC Setter of the Week after leading the Wildcats to a 3-0 week with wins over Michigan Tech, Saginaw Valley State, and Wayne State. She recorded 112 assists over the three matches with a season-high 52 against Wayne State. She added five service aces, three blocks, and two kills in the three matches as well. Van Remortel recorded 101.8 assists/set through the three contents and now sits at fourth in the conference averaging 9.51 assists/set.
