WSU's Giroux, DU's Kalinowski and FSU's Maat named GLIAC volleyball players of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following week two of the 2023 volleyball season. Wayne State sophomore middle Kayla Giroux received GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week, Davenport graduate libero Stephanie Kalinowski was honored as GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Ferris State junior setter Kaylee Maat was named GLIAC Setter of the Week. 


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Kayla Giroux, Wayne State

Sophomore middle hitter Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in her career on Tuesday.  The honor comes after Giroux hit .422 in Wayne State's four matches last week and was featured on the Findlay Classic All-Tournament Team, her second appearance on an All-Tournament Team already this season (Ferris State Invitational).  Friday and Saturday, Giroux racked up 44 kills to just nine errors on 83 total attacks.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Stephanie Kalinowski, Davenport

Stephanie Kalinowski (South Lyon, Mich.) of the Davenport University women’s volleyball team has been named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week. The graduate student recorded double-digit digs in all four of the teams matches this past weekend at the 2023 Hampton Inn and Suites Downtown Classic (Sept. 8-9). The libero registered a staggering 27 digs against Tiffin (Sept. 9), marking the second highest total of her career in a single match. Her career-high came against Parkside in 2020 when she tallied 29 digs. 


SETTER OF THE WEEK - Kaylee Maat, Ferris State

Ferris State University junior setter Kaylee Maat led the Bulldogs to a split in four matches against some of the nation's best competition this past weekend at the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver. Maat totaled 153 assists while averaging 10.20 assists per frame in FSU's four matches, which included three nationally-ranked opponents in addition to longtime regional power Lewis. She added 32 digs along with 11 kills, four aces and two blocks in FSU's 2-2 performance. Maat totaled 45 assists with 12 digs in a 3-1 win over Lewis along with 33 assists in the Bulldogs' 3-0 sweep over #22 Western Washington. FSU?s lone setbacks came to second-ranked and tournament champion Concordia-St. Paul in four sets along with 19th-ranked host Regis.
