MTU's Oujiri and Hayes and GVSU's Blaney earn GLIAC volleyball player of the week recognition

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 6 of the 2023 volleyball season. Michigan Tech senior outside hitter Lindy Oujiri earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week recognition, Grand Valley State junior libero Julia Blaney was named GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Michigan Tech freshman setter Tess Hayes was honored as GLIAC Setter of the Week.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Lindy Oujiri, Michigan Tech

Lindy Oujiri led Michigan Tech to its first weekend sweep of the season with wins over Purdue Northwest and Parkside at the SDC Gym. The senior captain averaged 4.29 kills per set while hitting .306. She tallied 13 kills in the sweep over the Pride and 17 in the 3-1 victory over the Rangers. Oujiri ranks second in the GLIAC in total kills (214), is fourth in kills per set (3.45), and fifth in points per set (3.7).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Julia Blaney, Grand Valley State

Junior libero Julia Blaney was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career, following the Lakers sweeps over SVSU and Wayne State. Blaney tallied 36 digs, good for six digs per set, four service aces, and posted a .929 service reception percentage. She recorded a season-high 22 digs and three service aces in Friday’s win over the Cardinals, then followed that up with 14 more digs and another ace against Wayne State.


SETTER OF THE WEEK - Tess Hayes, Michigan Tech

Tess Hayes helped lead Michigan Tech to its first weekend sweep of the season, setting the offense. She tallied 85 assists, averaging 12.14 per set. The freshman added 20 digs, three blocks, and a pair of kills. The Tech offense tallied 98 kills (14 k/s) and hit .275 on the weekend. Hayes notched 31 assists and eight digs Friday in the sweep of the Pride and a season-best 54 assists with 12 digs against the Rangers. She ranks fourth in the GLIAC in assists per set (9.24) and 16th in digs per set (2.74).
