Huskies beat LSSU to take GLIAC North lead

SAULT STE. MARIE – Michigan Tech moved into sole possession of first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division with Saturday's 66-44 women's basketball victory over Lake Superior State.

Coupled with Ferris State's victory over Saginaw Valley State, MTU (13-5 overall, 11-3 GLIAC) took a one-game lead over second-place SVSU and Grand Valley State. LSSU dropped to 4-16 overall and 3-11 GLIAC.

Elizabeth Kelliher scored 16 points to lead three double-figure scorers for MTU, which shot 49 percent from the field and limited LSSU to 15 field goals. Kylie Moxley totaled 15 points and seven rebounds, and Danielle Blake added 12 points for the Huskies.

Michigan Tech shot 53.6 percent from the field (15-of-28) to build a 36-17 halftime lead. For the game, the Huskies out-scored the Lakers 40-12 in the paint.

Mackenzie Edwards was 7-of-15 from the field, and totaled 21 points and six rebounds to lead Lake Superior State. Edwards, who was the only Laker to score in double figures, averaged 19.5 points per game during her last four outings. She is averaging 13.1 ppg for the season.

LSSU shot 31.9 percent from the field as a team, making 6-of-13 three-point attempts and 8-of-14 free throws. The Lakers out-rebounded MTU, 31-29.

Lake Superior State travels to Northwood Monday, then resumes its homestand Thursday against Saginaw Valley State.
