GVSU's Mencotti, Walsh's Berger Claim GLIAC Women's Soccer Weekly Honors

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly women's soccer awards after the seventh weekend of competition. Grand Valley State junior forward Gabriella Mencotti earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades for the third time this season, while Walsh junior defender Sarah Berger collected GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Gabriella Mencotti, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State junior forward Gabriella Mencotti scored six goals and added an assist in two weekend victories for the Lakers. Mencotti scored a goal and assisted on another in a 3-0 win against Ohio Dominican, before scoring a career high five goals on seven shots on goal in Sunday's 11-0 win over Findlay. Mencotti's five goals and ten points were both GVSU program records for a single-game, while the five goals scored in a conference match tied the GLIAC record for goals in a single game. Mencotti's 20 goals and 48 points this season leads NCAA Division II in both categories.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Sarah Berger, Walsh

Walsh junior defender Sarah Berger helped the Cavaliers shutout both opponents over the weekend as they defeated Northern Michigan 1-0 on Friday and tied with Michigan Tech 0-0 on Sunday. Against the Wildcats, Berger also provided the game-winning goal with a strike in the 86th minute. It was her third goal of the season. Berger and Walsh have now shutout their last three opponents.
