Tiffin's Nelhage Makes Deep ITA Regional Run, Earns Weekly Accolades

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its women's tennis weekly awards following the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by GVSU. Tiffin senior Caroline Nelhage claimed GLIAC Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season after an impressive run to the semifinals.


ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Caroline Nelhage, Tiffin

Tiffin senior standout Caroline Nelhage went 4-1 in singles play at the ITA Midwest Regional held at Grand Valley State University, advancing to the semifinals before falling to the eventual champion from Indianapolis. Nelhage had wins in the round of 64 over Indianapolis 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 32 against Maryville 6-2, 6-2, in the round of 16 over Drury 2-6, 6-4, 10-8, and in the quarterfinals against Michigan Tech 2-6, 6-3, 10-3. Her lone loss came by a 7-6, 6-1 score.

In doubles competition, Nelhage teamed with senior Aimee Kaye to go 3-1, falling in the semifinals. Nelhage & Kaye posted wins over Saginaw Valley 8-5, Michigan Tech 8-5, and Drury 8-6. Their lone loss was to Indianapolis 8-3. Nelhage's season singles record is now 10-1 while going 8-2 in doubles.


HONORABLE MENTION

  • Aimee Moccia (Grand Valley State) went 3-1 over the weekend in singles matches at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships. Moccia advanced to the quarterfinal of the tournament with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Izabella Ismailova of Saginaw Valley State in the round of 64, a 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) victory over Octavia Malin of Rockhurst in the round of 32, and a 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) win over Mercedes Fernanez of Walsh in the round of 16.
