GVSU Women's Soccer Tops NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason Rankings

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- For the third time in program history, the Grand Valley State women's soccer team will start its season ranked No. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Rankings. The poll was unveiled Thursday (Aug. 7) afternoon via NSCAATV's 2014 Preseason Division II Show.

This marks the 11th consecutive time the Lakers have been the top-ranked club in the NSCAA/Continental Tire rankings, which matches the longest streak in program history – 11 straight No. 1 rankings spanning from Sep. 2-Nov. 11, 2008 – and the third-longest run in history. Franklin Pierce holds the all-time record with 19 consecutive No. 1 rankings (Sep. 8, 1997-Nov. 9, 1998), while Metro State topped the poll 12 times from Dec. 7, 2004-Nov. 8, 2005, the second-longest run of its kind.

It is also the 38th time in history GVSU has been voted the No. 1 team in the country. No other team has been atop the rankings more than the Lakers since the poll's inception in 1997. GVSU has now been ranked in the last 107 polls, a remarkable streak that began way back on Sep. 13, 2005. The 2010 and 2011 teams were the only other Laker clubs to kick off a campaign atop the poll.
