GVSU's Shalamon, NMU's Helm Claim GLIAC Swimming Weekly Honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced the ninth weekly awards of the swimming and diving season. Grand Valley St. senior Harry Shalamon earned GLIAC Men's Athlete of the Week accolades, while Northern Michigan senior Rachel Helm captured GLIAC Women's Athlete of the Week honors.


MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Harry Shalamon - Grand Valley St. 

Grand Valley State senior Harry Shalamon has been named the GLIAC Swimmer of the Week it was announced by the league office for his performance at the Calvin Invitational. GVSU, ranked #5 in the latest D2 rankings, claimed the team title with 1,126 points. Shalamon won three individual events, was a part of a first-place finishing relay team and another that touched the wall second.  Shalamon, the defending NCAA Division II Champion in the 200 back, won the 100 (47.07) and 200 back (1:44.13), hit the wall first in the 200 IM (1:47.93) en route to hitting the NCAA qualifying mark in all three events. He was a part of the 200 medley relay team that finished first (1:28.42) and hit an NCAA mark and the 200 free relay team finished second. 


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Rachel Helm  - Northern Michigan 

On day two of the annual Calvin College Invitational, Helm finished second as a member of the 200-yard freestyle as the team touched the wall in 1:35.35. Helm helped lead her relay team to a second place finish in the 200-yard medley, touching the wall in 1:44.05 (28.71 seconds). She went on to win the 200-yard backstroke to contribute to the team’s first place overall finish at the mid season meet. Helm also won the 200-yard IM with a final time of 2:04.75 to round out her impressive performance at the three-day meet. This is Helm's eighth weekly GLIAC honor, including third of the 2019-20 season.
