FSU's Kovacs and GVSU's Barrett earn GLIAC Tennis Player of the Week accolades

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its second tennis weekly awards for the 2023 campaign. Ferris State freshman Erik Kovacs received men's player of the week recognition, while Grand Valley State senior Taylor Barrett was named women's player of the week. 


MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Erik Kovacs, Ferris State

Ferris State University freshman Erik Kovacs (Toronto) led the Bulldogs to a pair of decisive regional wins this past weekend as FSU improved to 4-1 overall this campaign. Kovacs went a perfect 4-0 on the weekend as Ferris State topped Hillsdale 7-0 on the road before a 6-1 home triumph against Findlay. He earned a three-set win at one singles along with a 6-3 doubles victory at three doubles versus Hillsdale on Friday (Feb. 10) night and then came back for a straight-set one singles triumph in Saturday's home victory. He also paired up with Yannic Mader for a 6-2 win at three doubles in Saturday's tilt. Kovacs has recorded a 3-1 mark at one singles along with a 3-0 doubles record to date this spring for FSU.


WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Taylor Barrett, Grand Valley State

Taylor Barrett (Holly, Mich.) helped lead the Lakers to a pair of regional wins last weekend against Walsh and Findlay. Barrett went 2-0 in singles and doubles all from the No. 1 position. The senior posted a 6-2, 6-1 straight set win against Walsh and claimed a 6-3, 3-6, 12-10 three-set win against Findlay in singles. Paired with Vasileia Griva in doubles, the two tallied a 6-2 win over Walsh and a 6-4 win against Findlay.
