WSU's Drenth and GVSU's Griva honored as GLIAC Tennis Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its third tennis weekly awards for the 2023 campaign. Wayne State sophomore Cedric Drenth earned men's player of the week recognition, while Grand Valley State junior Vasileia Griva was honored as women's player of the week. 


MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cedric Drenth, Wayne State

Against some of the top talents of Division II men’s tennis, WSU sophomore Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) had a strong showing at the ITA National Indoor Championship in Indianapolis last weekend. He recorded a 2-1 record in singles action over the three-day event, defeating Flagler’s Jacopo Denitto 6-1, 6-3 on Friday (February 17) to help the Warriors to a quarterfinals victory over the #4-ranked Saints. He finished the tournament on a high note with a win over Columbus State’s Tommaso Schold (7-5, 7-5) from the No. 2 singles spot on Sunday (February 19). Paired with Daniel Grey in doubles, Drenth helped the Green and Gold claim the doubles point as the duo won 6-4 at the No. 1 spot. This season, he has played all eight matches at either No. 1 or No. 2 singles, going 5-3 against high-quality opponents. It is the first GLIAC Player of the Week honor in the sophomore’s career.  


WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Vasileia Griva, Grand Valley State

Vasileia Griva (Athens, Greece) was named the GLIAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after helping the Lakers to a pair of regional wins against Illinois Springfield and Lewis. GVSU improved to 4-2 on the season. Griva went 2-0 from the No. 1 doubles position and 2-0 from the No. 1 singles position. The junior improved to 4-1in singles action and 4-1 from the No. 1 doubles position paired with Taylor Barrett.
