GVSU, WSU Carry Momentum into Day 2 of 2016 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships

DAY TWO RESULTS

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Momentum for both Grand Valley State and Wayne State carried over into Day 2 of the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Swimming & Diving Championships at Waterford Mott High School.

Almost in similar fashion to day one, nine of the eleven events on day two were won by two programs. However, Northern Michigan put a strong day together in the pool, locking up two first place finishes. Ryan Leonard’s first place finish in the men’s 400 Individual Medley broke the GLIAC meet record with a time of 3:51.65. Crystal Bennet followed Leonard’s performance with a first place finish of her own in the 100 butterfly clocking in with time of 56.26.

On the men’s side, the Lakers maintained their first place ranking (464) and added to their lead over the Wayne State Warriors (364.5) followed by the NMU Wildcats (243). On the women's side, host institution Wayne State also kept it’s first place spot (428) and increased their lead over The Lakers, who sit second (361) followed by the NMU Wildcats (244).
 
The Warrior’s women took first in both of the day two relays starting with the first final of the evening. The relay team of Estrada, Myers, Heitchue, and Maleski took first in the 200 Free Relay clocking 1:33.57 time. Later on in the night, the relay team Maleski, Loesch, Myers, & Estrada also took home first in the 400 Medley Relay. On the men’s side Ahmed Ahmed captured his second gold medal of the week in the 200 Free, touching in with a time of 1:38.27.
 
The Lakers had a strong day two on both the men’s and women’s side. Similar to day one, the Lakers took gold in the diving event with Jared Gregory earning first in the men’s one meter dive final. Mimicking the Warrior’s girls, the Laker’s men took home both gold medals in the relays for the day. Souza, Abbott, Ham, & Walling touched in with a time of 1:21.39 in the 200 Freestyle Relay, while the team of Ferrero, Mikalauskas, Souza, & Abbot took gold in the 400 Medley Relay. Samantha Postmus stepped on the podium for her first time this week during day two, after earning first in the 400 IM clocking in a time of 4:22.46. Giannai Ferrero took home his second gold medal of the week earning a top mark of 46.92 in the 100 fly, while Leonie Van Noort also captured her second gold medal finishing first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:49.09.
