Grand Valley State Wins Back-to-Back GLIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championship

WATERFORD TWP., Mich. -- The Grand Valley State men's swimming & diving team claimed the 2016 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championship Saturday evening with 840 points, easily outdistancing second-place Wayne State (720). The title was the second consecutive for the Lakers and the fifth GLIAC crown since 2005. The GVSU women finished second with 763 points. GVSU's Gianni Ferrero was named the GLIAC Men's Swimmer of the Year, while Jared Gregory was named the GLIAC Men's Diver of the Year. Leonie Van Noort was named the GLIAC Women's Swimmer of the Year.

MEN

Gianni Ferrero continued to dominate the 2016 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships, capturing his fourth individual title with his first-place finish in the 100 free in an NCAA B cut time of 44.83. It marked the seventh individual career title for Ferrero and his 15th including relays. Danny Abbott hit the wall second in an NCAA B cut time of 45.15, while Ben Walling also hit the NCAA B cut with his fifth-place finish in 45.95. JD Ham picked up a 12th-place finish in a time of 47.00.

Marius Mikalauskas claimed the GLIAC title in the 200 breaststroke, hitting the NCAA B cut and setting a school-record with a time of 1:58.54. Garret McCormick finished 11th (2:07.18) and Tim Harris 13th (2:07.22). 

GVSU dominated the 3-meter board just as the 1-meter board, taking the top four spots and scoring 68 points. Brad Dalrymple finsihed first with a score of 493.70, followed by Jared Gregory in second (463.30), Joe Gucwa in third (453.70) and Ian Ellis in fourth (450.60). 

Joseba Hidalgo Vilela hit the NCAA B cut in the 200 backstroke with his sixth-place finish in a time of 1:49.37, followed by Grant Borregard in eighth with a time of 1:51.45. 

Michael Hudson hit the wall sixth in the 1650 free in a time of 16:16.21, followed by Brien Moffitt finished in eighth (16:22.70) and Matt Stevens in 11th (16:49.16). 

GVSU's 400 free relay team of Gabriel Souza, Ham, Zacek and Stevens finished fifth in a time of 3:06.33. 

WOMEN

Leonie Van Noort claimed her fourth individual GLIAC title at the 2016 Championship meet with a first-place finish in the 1650 free, hitting the wall in an NCAA B cut time of 16:54.39. Sam Postmus finished second and hit the NCAA B cut with a time of 17:02.06, while Meghan Shaughnessy also hit the NCAA B cut with her seventh-place finish in 17:34.06. Caroline Brereton hit the wall eighth (17:40.17) and Julia Suriano ninth (17:40.43).

Kathryn Culver finished seventh in the 100 free, hitting the wall in 53.07, while Jenn Priebefinished 13th in a time of 53.67 and Mercedes Martinez 16th (54.21).

Hailey Garlich recorded a seventh-place finish in the 200 backstroke (2:04.77), followed by Meghan Falconer in eighth (2:05.88), Kaitlin Cassel in 11th (2:05.34) and Suriano in 14th (2:08.16). 

Lara Deibel hit the NCAA B cut and tallied a second-place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:18.92, while Emily Gallagher also hit the NCAA B cut with a fourth-place finish in a time of 2:19.32. Celia Hoag added a 12th-place finish when she hit the wall in 2:25.17.

The 400 free relay team of Postmus, Deibel, Priebe and Van Noort hit the wall second in an NCAA B cut time of 3:27.66.
