ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The No. 3 Grand Valley State Lakers scored on a set piece late Friday to escape the Northwood Timberwolves, 1-0, at the GVSU Soccer Field in front of 428 fans. The Lakers go undefeated on their season-opening homestand to start the year 5-0-0 while Northwood falls to 1-3-0.
Riko Sagara scored the only goal in the match. After the Timberwolves passed the ball to their own goalkeeper, who picked up the ball, warranted a free kick from inside the penalty area, the Lakers used some trickery to get Sagara a clean look from 15-yards out. The strike found the left side of the net for her fifth goal of the season, and third off a set piece. The Lakers possessed the ball for most of the match and wound up taking 22 shots, but only three were on frame and - other than the goal - none were all too threatening.
GVSU looks for a 6-0 start as they play their first road match of the season on Sunday, facing the Ashland Eagles at 12:00 PM in Ohio. GVSULakers.com will have links to live stats and the @GVSUSoccer Twitter feed will provide updates throughout.
