FSU's Chambliss, GVSU's King and Reed earn GLIAC football players of the week honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 5 of the 2023 football season. Ferris State redshirt freshman quarterback Trinidad Chambliss was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Grand Valley State Lakers earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week and GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, with sophomore defensive end Niles King and redshirt freshman wide receiver/kick returner Kellen Reed being recognized, respectively. .


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Trinidad Chambliss, Ferris State

Ferris State University redshirt freshman quarterback Trinidad Chambliss helped lead the nation's top-ranked Bulldogs to a record-setting 78-3 home win over Northern Michigan on Saturday at Top Taggart Field. In FSU's homecoming game, Chambliss ran for a career-high 125 yards on five carries and scored on a pair of touchdown runs as FSU totaled a school single-game record 78 points in the league-opening victory. He scored on runs of 25 and 68 yards in the opening half as the Bulldogs built a commanding 55-3 halftime lead. Chambliss, who was one of four FSU quarterbacks to see action in the win, also completed four-of-seven passes for 30 yards and his play helped the Bulldogs rack up an impressive 705 yards of total offense and 497 rushing yards, which both rank among the top five single-game totals in Bulldog history.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Niles King, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State sophomore defensive end Niles King tallied 2.5 QB sacks (-23), 2.5 tackles for loss (-23) and 4.5 total tackles in the Lakers' 55-14 victory over Saginaw Valley State. The Laker defense limited SVSU to 142 yards of total offense, including 34 rushing yards in the game.


SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kellen Reed, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State redshirt freshman WR Kellen Reed returned two kickoffs for 116 yards, including a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown after a Saginaw Valley State touchdown to pull the Cardinals within six points. Reed's return gave GVSU a 27-14 lead and sparked a 35-point outburst for GVSU in a span of five minutes on the game clock. Reed, who leads the nation in kickoff returns for touchdowns this season with two, also rushed three times for 19 yards.
