Four GLIAC teams in action Thursday to kick off 2023 football season

GLIAC -- The highly-anticipated 2023 GLIAC Football season will kick off on Thursday, Aug. 31, with four conference teams in action.

The opening night marquee matchup will take place in Golden, Colo. when defending GLIAC champion No. 3 Grand Valley State visits No. 2 Colorado School of Mines (8 p.m. ET). A year ago, the Lakers downed the Orediggers, 25-22, in Allendale. GVSU is coming off a 12-1 campaign, including a 6-0 conference mark.

Reigning national champion Ferris State will begin defense of its back-to-back titles when it hosts Mercyhurst (8 p.m.) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids. The Bulldogs enter 2023 the consensus No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II.

Coming off an eight-win season, Saginaw Valley State gets the 2023 campaign underway at home versus Winona State (6 p.m.).

Northern Michigan will open the Shane Richardson coaching era on the road, playing at Minnesota Duluth. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Davenport will welcome Thomas More to The Farm (12 p.m.) and Wayne State will travel to No. 15 Slippery Rock (6 p.m.).

Michigan Tech begins its season next Saturday (Sept. 9) at home versus in-state foe Hillsdale.
