FSU's Mitchell, GVSU's McCarroll and WSU's Milovanski honored as GLIAC football players of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 6 of the 2023 football season. Ferris State senior quarterback Mylik Mitchell received GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, Grand Valley State senior defensive end Christian McCarroll earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week and Wayne State junior kicker Griffin Milovanski was recognized as GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mylik Mitchell, Ferris State

Ferris State University senior quarterback Mylik Mitchell had a big day for the top-ranked Bulldogs in a 38-17 home win over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Oct. 7) as FSU stayed unbeaten in GLIAC play. The veteran signal caller threw for 262 yards and five touchdowns on 12-of-14 passing as the Bulldogs rolled up 500 yards of total offense and 27 first downs. Three of his touchdowns went to senior wideout Xavier Wade, including two early throws of 41 and 58 yards as the Bulldogs jumped out to an early 14-0 lead on their first two offensive possessions. He also completed a 40-yard scoring throw to Tyrese Hunt-Thompson in the two-minute drill before halftime as FSU regained a 21-14 lead. Mitchell added two more key second-half TD throws covering 28 yards to Wade and six yards to Hunt-Thompson as FSU sealed the victory at Top Taggart Field.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Christian McCarroll, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State senior defensive end Christian McCarroll tallied four tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss (-6) and a QB sack (-3) in just 15 snaps of action as GVSU claimed a 65-7 victory over Kentucky State. McCarroll's sack also resulted in a safety for GVSU. McCarroll has recorded a QB sack and a TFL in all five games this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Griffin Milovanski, Wayne State

On a windy day at WSU's Tom Adams Field, WSU junior place-kicker Griffin Milovanski connected on all three field goal attempts (22, 38 and 47 yards) yards to propel the Warriors to a 23-21 victory. His counterpart from MTU missed on all three of his field goal attempts (29, 45 and 46 yards). Two of Milovanski's four deep kickoffs went for touchbacks (his other KO was a pooch kick).
