NMU's Helm, GVSU's Saura Armengol Capture Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week Honors

BAY CITY, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its first weekly awards for the swimming and diving season. Northern Michigan sophomore Rachel Helm earned GLIAC Female Athlete of the Week accolades, while Grand Valley State freshman Oscar Saura Armengol captured GLIAC Male Athlete of the Week honors.


FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Rachel Helm, Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan sophomore Rachel Helm earned an NCAA provision B Cut time in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming in 2:00.76 seconds, good for a new PEIF Pool Record.  The swim is currently the fastest time among all Division II.  For the weekend, she finished with five first-place finishes in two meets against Findlay University.  

On Friday, Helm captured the 25-yard breaststroke, 75-yard backstroke and the 125-yard individual medley.  She followed it Saturday with victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard backstroke while joining the winning 200-yard freestyle relay which also set a PEIF Pool Record in a time 1:46.12.


MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK - Oscar Saura Armengol, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State freshman Oscar Saura Armengol turned in an outstanding opening dual meet to his collegiate career as the Lakers claimed a 141-102 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Saura Armengol hit the wall first in the 200 free (1:43.04) and his first-place finishing time of 1:52.82 in the 200 fly   is currently the third fastest time in NCAA Division II. In addition, he recorded a :22.81 in the 50 Fly Split of the first-place finishing 200 medley relay.
