Northwood Captures 2015 GLIAC Men's Soccer Championship

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The No. 17 Northwood Timberwolves were crowned the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Men's Soccer champions on Friday (Oct. 30) after a 1-0 victory on the road over rival No. 11 Saginaw Valley State.

The lone goal of the match came in the 33rd minute when senior midfielder Jack Smith connected on a bending free kick from just outside the 18 yard box which found the top-left corner of the goal. NU coach Doug Carter's squad avenged a 2-1 loss back on Sept. 11 to earn the regular season title in a winner-take-all bout with the Cardinals. Senior goalkeeper Johannes Sterobo recorded four saves on the afternoon as the Timberwolves played lockdown defense for much of the contest.

With the victory, Northwood will play host to the 2015 GLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament at the No. 1 seed. The four-team, single-eliminate weekend will begin with a pair of semifinal matches on Friday, Nov. 6.

The semifinal matches will feature No. 3 Lake Erie battling No. 2 Saginaw Valley State to start the weekend at 10 AM on Friday, while top-seeded Northwood tangles with No. 4 Tiffin at 1 PM on Friday.
