MIDLAND, MICH. -- The Northwood University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the hiring of David Shumaker as the head coach of the volleyball program.

He becomes just the fifth coach in the 34-year history of Northwood Volleyball.

"I want to thank President (Keith A.) Pretty and Dave Marsh for entrusting me to become the next volleyball coach at Northwood University," said Shumaker. "I feel extremely honored to be a part of a university that offers great academics, great athletic programs and competes in one of the toughest division II conferences in the country. Even more importantly, I will be a part of a staff that believes in helping students make a difference. I look forward to helping our student athletes develop as champions on the court, in the classroom, in the community and in life."

In over 15 years as a head coach at two different institutions, Shumaker has posted 346 victories and a .644 win percentage (346-191).

Shumaker comes to Northwood after a highly-successful stint as the head coach at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. He posted a 137-55 record (.714) in that time while winning four straight Appalachian Athletic Conference championships. A two-time AAC Coach of the Year (2012, 2013), Shumaker led Bryan at least 20 wins in all five seasons. The 2013 team posted a program-best record of 33-4, which earned Shumaker the AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year award.

Prior to his time at Bryan, Shumaker spent 10 seasons at Summit University in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania. He posted a 209-136 record at Summit while serving as a full-time professor. Shumaker led the team to a runner-up finish in the NCCAA in 2005. He then led the transition for the program going from the NCCAA to NCAA Division III. During his time at Bryan, Shumaker was named the National Coach of the Year in 2003 and the Regional Coach of the Year three times.

"We are excited to welcome David Shumaker to the Northwood family as our new head volleyball coach," said Dave Marsh, Northwood Athletic Director. "David is a proven winner with a long history of success.  In addition to his accomplishments on the court, he is a man of great integrity and work ethic who will be a great fit at Northwood. We are confident with David at the helm our volleyball program will be able to consistently compete at a high level."

Shumaker and his wife Joanna have two children: Drew and Danielle.
