GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following Week 1 of the men's basketball season. Ferris State redshirt senior guard Walt Kelser claimed GLIAC North Division Player of the Week, while Grand Valley State senior forward Jake Van Tubbergen was selected as GLIAC South Division Player of the Week.

NORTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Walt Kelser - Ferris State

Ferris State University redshirt senior guard Walt Kelser had a huge weekend as the Bulldog men's basketball squad got off to a strong start with back-to-back regional home wins at Jim Wink Arena. Kelser averaged 30 points in the two games, including scoring a personal career-high 40 points in Sunday's impressive 124-77 win over previously unbeaten Drury (Mo.). Overall, he shot 65.7% from the floor for the weekend, going 23-of-35, and hit on 69.2% (9-13) threes along with five-of-seven (71.4%) free throws. In Sunday's win, Kelser made 15-of-19 field goals and eight-of-11 long range tries while adding five assists and three steals in only 24 minutes of action. His play helped FSU set a new Wink Arena scoring record with 124 points, which was only two shy of the school all-time mark, and the Bulldogs also made a school-record 19 three's in the victory. Kelser also had a strong performance in Friday night's season-opening 83-76 win over Ohio Dominican with 20 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. He finished with 60 points on the weekend.

SOUTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jake Van Tubbergen - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State senior forward Jake Van Tubbergen posted a double-double with 25 points and 12 rebounds , shooting 60% from the floor and hitting a pair of threes to lead the Lakers to a huge wire-to-wire road regional win. Playing a team that scored 80 points in their first game, Van Tubbergen led a defense that held the Greyhounds to just eight points through the first 10 minutes and a lowly 60 for the game.
