FSU's McCartney and NMU's Holzwart honored as GLIAC women's basketball players of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced that Ferris State senior guard Mallory McCartney was awarded GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Northern Michigan junior guard Mackenzie Holzwart earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week recognition following Week 2 of the 2023-24 women's basketball season. 


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mallory McCartney, Ferris State

Ferris State University senior guard Mallory McCartney led the nation?s 20th-ranked Bulldogs to a decisive 89-59 regional road win over Northwood this past Wednesday (Nov. 15) night in Midland as FSU stayed unbeaten at 3-0 on the year. McCartney tallied a game-high 34 points on 13-of-17 (76.5%) shooting while sinking eight-of-11 (72.7%) three?s in the triumph. She also grabbed six rebounds, dished out four assists and registered two steals for the Bulldogs in 36 minutes of action against a veteran Northwood squad.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mackenzie Holzwart, Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan junior Mackenzie Holzwart played a key role NMU's 75-61 win at Roosevelt and 74-53 win over Southwest Minnesota State. The native of Howards Grove, Wisconsin led all GLIAC players with eight steals over the two NMU wins while also recording a block. The guard was all over the floor, as she pulled down an impressive 18 rebounds (13 defensive) in the two contests, leading Northern in allowing just 14 total second-chance points last week. Holzwart now leads GLIAC guards in defensive rebounds/game (5.3) this season. Holzwart is stuffing the stat sheet so far for the Green and Gold, averaging 10.0 ppg, 3.5 apg, and 6.8 rpg as she has played a big role in the 4-0 start for the Wildcats.
