SVSU's Garrett and NMU's Schultz earn GLIAC men's basketball player of the week honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced that Saginaw Valley State senior guard Tre Garrett has been honored as GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week while Northern Michigan junior forward Sam Schultz was selected as GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week following Week 11 of the 2023-24 men's basketball season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tre Garrett, Saginaw Valley State

Tre Garrett had a fantastic week for the Cardinals. He set a career-high in points with 31 in the win over Lake Superior State on Thursday night. He shot 15-17 from the free throw line during that game to lead SVSU to the win. He followed that performance up by setting another career high in points with 32 against 13th-ranked Ferris State on Saturday. During the game against the Bulldogs, Garrett hit 1,000 career points as well as set new career bests for free throws made (17) and free throws attempted (24).

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sam Schultz, Northern Michigan

Northern Michigan forward Sam Schultz has been named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. Schultz helped lead the Green and Gold to its 12th consecutive win, recording his eighth double-double of the season in a 98-66 rout of Michigan Tech. The native of Aurora, Illinois pulled down 13 rebounds, added 11 points, and notched a steal on Saturday afternoon. Schultz paces the GLIAC averaging 10.3 rebounds/game. That mark is good for 11th in the country. He is also one of only 12 players across Division II to be averaging a double-double, and the only one in the Midwest. The honor marks the fourth consecutive week a Wildcat has been recognized by the conference, following back-to-back Offensive Player of the Week accolades for Max Weisbrod and a Dylan Kuehl Defensive Player of the Week award prior.
