MTU's Tomashek and LSSU's Soper selected as GLIAC men's basketball players of the week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced that Michigan Tech sophomore guard Marcus Tomashek has been honored with GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades while Lake Superior State junior guard/forward Hunter Soper was recognized as GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week following Week 14 of the 2023-24 men's basketball season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Marcus Tomashek, Michigan Tech

Michigan Tech sophomore guard Marcus Tomashek scored a game-high 34 points to defeat No. 24 Northern Michigan 80-69 to give the Wildcats its second conference loss of the season. The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native neared a double-double with nine defensive rebounds. He also shot 57.1 percent from the field (12-for-21) and 70 percent from beyond the arc (7-for-10). This is the GLIAC's leading scorer's fifth time scoring 30 or more points this season.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hunter Soper, Lake Superior State

Hunter Soper (Lexington, Mich.) made life difficult for opposing offenses this week, pressuring opponents into multiple turnovers, resulting in him notching five steals while only committing two personal fouls in 76 minutes of playing time. He also proved to be a force on the glass, coming away with 21 total rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds to allow for several second chance opportunities for his team, including boxing out for a tip-in with three-seconds remaining in regulation on Thursday to force overtime against Wayne State. Soper’s 23-point, 15-rebound double-double in the Lakers’ 77-69 victory on Saturday also marked new career-highs in both categories. This marks the first GLIAC Weekly honors of Soper’s career.
