DU's Whelan and SVSU's Maziasz receive GLIAC men's soccer weekly awards

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following Week 7 of the 2021 men's soccer season. Davenport redshirt junior forward Matt Whelan was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week. Saginaw Valley State senior goalkeeper Mason Maziasz claimed GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Matt Whalen - Davenport

Redshirt junior forward Matt Whelan (Cork, Ireland) provided both goals in a 2-1 win at Upper Iowa on Friday, which propelled the Panthers to first place in the GLIAC. He now has five goals this season and the win snapped UIU's four-match win streak.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mason Maziasz - Saginaw Valley State

Senior goalkeper Mason Maziasz (Troy, Mich.) finished with 220 minutes of shutout play on the weekend, helping Saginaw Valley State earn two scoreless ties on the road over the weekend at Parkside and at Northern Michigan. Maziasz recorded eight total saves in the draws. Maziasz is 2-1-2 in net this season, allowing just one goal in five appearances.
